The oldest settlement that left traces in the area was an Iron Age hill fort dating back to around 650 BC. During the Anglo-Saxon times, Aylesbury became a market town that benefited from the many pilgrims who came to visit the burial site of Saint Osyth. In 1529, Henry VIII declared Aylesbury county town of Buckinghamshire, effectively replacing Buckingham, allegedly to curry favour from Thomas Boleyn, the father of Anne Boleyn. During the English Civil War, Aylesbury was a stronghold of the Parliamentarian forces and site of the Battle of Aylesbury. Luis XVIII spent his exile in Aylesbury from 1810 to 1814, during which his wife Marie Josephine of Savoy died and became the only French Queen to be buried on English soil.
