The name Bayswater emerged in 17th century the area having been variously known as Bayards Watering Place and Bayswatering. Bayswater was initially developed as a fashionable residential suburb when, in 1827, the surveyor to the Bishop of London laid out the area between Praed Street, Edgware Road and Bayswater Road comprising an inter-related pattern of wide streets, crescents and squares planned on either sides of the main thoroughfares of Westbourne Terrace and Sussex Gardens. It retains its predominantly residential character and was first designated as a conservation area in 1967.
