Bloomsbury is an area of Central London situated south in the London Borough of Camden. It was developed by the Russell family in the 17th and 18th centuries into a fashionable residential area noted for its array of garden squares. The latter two giving access to the mainline stations of Euston, King's Cross and St Pancras International with its Eurostar services. The area is well served by cross London and local bus routes.
Bloomsbury contains amongst other recognised landmarks the British Museum, British Medical Association and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Bloomsbury also houses the University of London’s Senate House; its Library, its central departments and some of its constituent colleges including University College, London, Birkbeck; London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, School of Pharmacy and School of Oriental and African Studies. Its medical fame is represented by Great Ormond Street Hospital, the National Hospital for Neurology and Nervous Diseases, and the state of the art University College Hospital and the Royal Homeopathic Hospital.
As Bloomsbury is home to mainly academic and medical institutions and houses many legal and financial firms, its retail environment, outside the Brunswick Centre, consists mainly of independent outlets with some high street names and a vary varied restaurant culture.
