Burnham is a civil parish and village in Buckinghamshire, England. It is located 27 miles west of London, 19 miles east of Reading and 2 miles northwest of Woking. The postcode is SL1 and the village has a population of approximately 11,500.
Burnham’s name derives from the Old English for ‘homestead on the stream’, which is a reference to the location of the village close to the river Thames. In 1086 the village was recorded in the Domesday Book under the name of Burneham and as the property of Water Fitz-Other. Richard King of the Romans founded a Benedictine Abbey in the village in 1265 that was dismantled during the Dissolution of the Monasteries under Henry VIII. Due to its location on the road from London to Bath the village rapidly grew in importance and was granted a royal charter in 1271. However, in 1280 a bridge over the Thames was built in Maidenhead and diverted the route away from Burnham. Even the weekly market was moved to Maidenhead and Burnham fell into relative decay. With the arrival of the railway in the area, Slough, a town southeast of Burnham, began to expand rapidly and mostly absorbed the village in its urban spread. Burnham retains however its own character and is therefore still regarded as a village by its residents despite its population.
One of the main attractions in Burnham include the parish church St Peter from the 12th century, Burnham Beeches, an area of protected ancient woodland that due to its outstanding natural beauty is a desired filming location, and Dorneywood, a Queen Anne style house from 1920 that serves as a country home for a senior member of the government. Moreover, Burnham is home to the Burnham Football Club.
