In the year 871 AD, the Abbey was destroyed by Viking raiders who came up the Thames sacking and pillaging everything in their path. Ninety monks were murdered, and it took more than fifty years prior to the Abbey being rebuilt. There are a number beautiful 18th century houses in the town and the parish church of St. Peter's has an attractive medieval tower and chancel arch. The seven-arched bridge over the Thames is the centre of much riverside activity with pubs, boat building yards and an abundance of river traffic.
