Fitzrovia, has been known affectionately since the 1930’s as the area to the north of Oxford Street and bounded by Portland Place; Tottenham Court Road and Marylebone Road. In the years between the two world wars Fitzrovia’s bohemian reputation was accredited to George Orwell; Augustus John and Dylan Thomas amongst others with John supposedly coining the name ‘Fitzrovia’ in honour of his favourite hostelry, the Fitzroy Tavern in Charlotte Street the areas best known street. From 1994 the name Fitzrovia was officially recorded on the Ordnance Survey maps of the area.
Fitzrovia, also known throughout London as Noho, lies both in the City of Westminster and the London Borough of Camden. Access to the London underground is at Regents Park; Warren Street; Euston Square with access to Euston mainline station; Goodge Street; Tottenham Court Road and Oxford Circus. There are also many cross London bus services. Nearby attractions include the British Museum; British Telecom Communication Tower; Pollocks Toy Museum and Senate House (the centrepiece and administrative hub of one of London’s most famous academic institutions University College London).
Fitzrovia although probably best known for its vibrant restaurant scene offers a diverse retail scenario from the large electronics and furniture outlets in Tottenham Court Road to the vast and varied offer of clothes shops in Oxford Street and to the many high quality independent restaurants; art galleries and clothes shops in and around Charlotte Street. There is much media activity centered on this area as are rag trade head offices and the professions are represented by many medical practices given the proximity of the new University College Hospital. Fitzrovia is also home to many legal and accountancy practices and offers access to many academic institutions. The commercial mix ranges from offices in converted houses to new build and corporate accommodation. The area also offers many different styles of hotels and residential accommodation.
Fitzrovia has a certain neglected charm but has much to offer in terms of location and facilities including many flexible serviced offices; offices to let and virtual offices.
