Grimsby is a seaport in Lincolnshire, England. It is located 15 miles north of Louth, 33 miles southeast of Hull and 27.3 miles east of Scunthorpe. The postcode is DN31-DN35 and the town has a population of approximately 88,000.
Although there are traces of Roman settlement in the area from the 2nd century AD, the town was officially founded by the Danes seven centuries later. The town’s name originates from the term Grim’s by or Grim’s village, referring to Grim the Danish Viking. The town also appears in the Domesday Book where it is noted to have a population of 200 in 1086. Due to its favourable location near the rich fishing grounds of the North Sea and its position on The Haven, which provides shelter for ships during storms, Grimsby developed into a fishing and trading port during the 12th century. With the start of the Industrial Revolution the port grew rapidly due to the rising demand on iron and timber. During World War II the port was severely bombed by the German Luftwaffe, but significantly less than the neighbouring fishing port Hull because it was a potential point of invasion.
