Hampshire was the departure point of some of those later to settle in the east coast of the United States in the 17th century, giving its name in particular to New Hampshire.

Southampton Airport, with an accompanying main line railway station, is an international airport situated in the Borough of Eastleigh, close to Swaythling in the city of Southampton. Ferries link the county to the Isle of Wight, the Channel Islands and continental Europe. The South Western Main Line railway from London to Weymouth runs through Winchester and Southampton, and the Wessex Main Line from Bristol to Portsmouth also runs through the county; as does the Portsmouth Direct Line.

Hampshire has excellent motorway links to London. The M3 motorway connects the county to London. The M27 motorway serves a bypass for the major conurbations and as a link to other settlements on the south coast. Other important roads include the A3, A31 and A36.

Significant employers in Southampton include the University of Southampton, the Ford Transit factory, Ordnance Survey, the BBC, the NHS and one of the largest commercial ports in Europe. In Portsmouth one tenth of the city's workforce works at Naval Dockyard. The city is also host to the European headquarters of IBM, the UK headquarters of Zurich Financial Services, and the Grumman Aerospace Corporation.
