Hyde Park, one of the largest parks in Central London is one of the eight Royal Parks of London.  The park is divided in two by the Serpentine and is adjacent to Kensington Gardens, another of the Royal Parks.  To the southeast (but outside of Hyde Park) is Hyde Park Corner.  The park was the site of The Great Exhibition of 1851 and the original home for the Crystal Palace.

In 1536, King Henry VIII confiscated Hyde Park from the monks of Westminster Abbey and used it primarily for hunting.  In 1637, Hyde Park was opened to the public by King Charles I and the current park layout was planned in 1825.  Hyde Park covers an area of more than 360 acres (142 hectares) and hosts many large events, including celebrations and concerts.  It is also a popular place for jogging, swimming, rowing, picnicking and horse riding in Rotten Row which in the 17^th century became the first public road to be lit after dark.

Places of interest in Hyde Park include:  The Serpentine, constructed in 1730 and popular for boating and swimming; the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain; Speaker's Corner near Marble Arch; Marble Arch itself and Wellington Arch on Hyde Park Corner which connects Hyde Park with Green Park, another of the Royal Parks of London.

Hyde Park is served by five London Underground stations located on or near the edges of Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens.  Commencing at the south east corner of Hyde Park working clockwise, they are:  Hyde Park Corner, Knightsbridge, Queensway, Lancaster Gate and Marble Arch.  Victoria Station with both its mainline station and coach station are close to Hyde Park Station.  Many buses also serve the local area.
