Commercial Offices to Let in Kings Lynn & Serviced Office Space to Rent in Kings Lynn, Norfolk

Kings Lynn is a market town and sea port in Norfolk, England. It is located 42 miles northwest of Norwich, 35 miles northeast of Peterborough and 60 miles southeast of Lincoln. The postcode is PE30 and the town has a population of approximately 43,000.

The origin of the town’s name is uncertain and may be derived from the Celtic word Llyn for lake just as well as from the Anglo-Saxon word Lean, meaning tenure in fee or farm. The town is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Lun and at the time was property of the Bishop of Elmham and the Archbishop of Canterbury. It started to develop after Bishop Herbert de Losinga of Thetford commissioned St. Margaret’s Church and authorised a market to be held every Saturday. From that time onward Kings Lynn began to grow through trade using the water ways that stretched inland from the sea and became England’s third most important port in the 14th century. It was a subsidiary office of the Hanseatic League, which dominated the European sea trade. This brought growth and prosperity to the town but also the plague which broke out five times between 1516 and 1665. Later the discovery of the Americas and the transatlantic trade threatened Kings Lynn’s importance as an international port but since transportation by water was far cheaper than transport by road, it remained an important port for coastal trade. Kings Lynn’s economy slowly reoriented itself towards shipbuilding, which kept the town afloat until the Industrial Revolution started in Kings Lynn with the rather late arrival of the railway in 1847. The town was bombed by a Zeppelin in 1915 at the outbreak of World War I and suffered several air raids during World War II. In 1962 Kings Lynn was declared an overflow town for London which led to another sharp increase in population.

Kings Lynn has a station serviced by the National Rail lines First Capital Connect (linking London, West Hampstead, St Albans, Luton, Bedford, Potters Bar, Enfield, Welwyn, Hertford, Stevenage, Hitchin, Royston, Cambridge, Sandy, Huntingdon, Peterborough, Ely and Kings Lynn) and National Express East Anglia (connecting London, Stratford, Romford, Shenfield, Upminster, Wickford, Southminster, Rayleigh, Southend-on-Sea, Chelmsford, Witham, Braintree, Marks Tey, Sudbury, Colchester, Clacton on sea, Manningtree, Harwich, Ipswich, Westerfield, Woodbridge, Saxmundham, Beccles, Lowestoft, Reedham, Great Yarmouth, Acle, Brundall, Norwich, North Walsham, Cromer, Sheringham, Diss, Stowmarket, Bury St Edmunds, Newmarket, Wymondham, Attleborough, Thetford, Kings Lynn, Ely, Cambridge, Stansted, Bishpos Stortford, Broxbourne, Hertford, Enfield, March, Peterborough and Chingford). Moreover it is located 46 miles northwest of Norwich International Airport and 44 miles north of the M11 motorway from Cambridge to London over Saffron Walden, Stansted Mountfitchet, Bishop’s Stortford, Sawbridgeworth, Harlow, Epping and Loughton.

Attractions in Kings Lynn include the Majestic Cinema, St Margaret’s Church, Custom House from 1685, Greyfriars Tower as the only remains of a Franciscan monastery and the Hanseatic Warehouses, which are the last surviving Hansa buildings in England. The Mart is an annual funfair which has its root in the international trade fairs from the 16th century, which attracted many visitors from Italy and Germany. Furthermore, Kings Lynn has a football club nicknamed “The Linnets”, a motorcycle speedway team and a successful basketball team, the College of West Anglia Fury.
