The London Bridge area is loosely defined and is centred on London Bridge famous for falling down and being rebuilt quite a few times over the centuries and recorded for posterity in the children’s nursery rhyme. The bridge, which spans the River Thames, links the City of London and Southwark. It forms the western end of the Pool of London and lies between Cannon Street Railway Bridge and Tower Bridge. Southwark Cathedral and London Bridge Station are on the south side of the bridge and Monument Station and the Monument to the Great Fire of London are on the north side of the bridge.
There has been a bridge on or near the current site since Roman times. The early wooden bridges were finally replaced by stone at the end of 12th century. In the middle ages, the Bridge was crowded with houses and shops which presented a fire and traffic hazard and it wasn’t until 18th century that permission was obtained to demolish all the shops and houses on the Bridge and the two centre arches of the bridge were replaced with a single wider span to improve navigation on the river. It was the only bridge on the Thames downstream from Kingston until Putney Bridge was opened in 1729. A new bridge was built by John Rennie in 19th century which lasted until 1968 when it was bought by a US oil company, disassembled, and reconstructed as a tourist attraction in Arizona in 1971. The current bridge was finally opened in 1973.
The area is served by two London Underground Stations to be found on the northern and southern ends of the Bridge – Monument and London Bridge giving speedy access to both the West End and Canary Wharf. London Bridge Station, one of the oldest main line stations still in existence, and currently subject to a major refurbishment, is served by First Capital Connect with its Bedford to Brighton routes taking in Gatwick and Luton Airports and by Southern services to South London and the South Coast. London Bridge carries part of the A3 arterial road from the South Coast into London. There is also a bus station adjacent to the Station providing a comprehensive network of cross London and local buses.
Although predominantly a commercial area London Bridge itself attracts many tourists as does the nearby Tower Bridge and Tower of London as well as the Pool of London. The area between London Bridge and Tower Bridge on the south side of the Thames is designated a business improvement district and is subject to a new round of regeneration with many prestigious commercial developments most recognisably The Shard London Bridge which will become the tallest building in Western Europe. Upon completion The Shard will form part of The London Bridge Quarter; one of the many developments that will deliver to the area a comprehensive mix of new retail units, corporate headquarters, professional offices of varying size and usage alongside refurbished historical buildings. A collection of gourmet food shops can be found in The Vaults in a tunnel below London Bridge Station. The area also offers residential accommodation and hotels.
