Melksham is a town in Wiltshire, England. It is located 12 miles southeast of Bath, 7 miles south of Chippenham and 14 miles north of Warminster. The postcode is SN12 and the town has a population of approximately 21,000.
The name Melksham most likely derived from the Old English words meolk and ham, which mean milk and village respectively. The town grew as a fort on the River Avon and had become a royal estate by the time of the Norman Conquest. In 1817 Freemasons came to Melksham and moved into the former Lodge of Westbury. This created unrest within the population and the Freemasons were forced to hold their meetings in a neighbouring village until they established the Chaloner Lodge of Freemasons in Melksham. With the decline of the textile industry in the area in the early 17th century, the idea of building a spa in Melksham arose but had to be reduced to the creation of three lodging houses, which were not as successful as expected due to the lack of real springs and the close proximity to the very popular spa in Bath.
