Newark-on-Trent is a market town in Nottinghamshire, England. It is located 20 miles southeast of Mansfield, 17 miles southwest of Lincoln and 23 miles northeast of Nottingham. The postcode is NG24 and the town has a population of approximately 25,000.

The town lies close to the great Roman road called Fosse Way and was most likely a Roman settlement. It was later recorded as property of the abbey of Peterborough and later of Lady Godiva and her husband Leofric Earl of Mercia. Newark Castle started as a fortified manor house of King Edward the Elder and developed into a centre of wool and cloth trade, which led to a major market being established during the reign of Henry II. By 1377 Newark has grown to be one of the biggest towns in England with a population of 1,178 excluding beggars and clergy. Newark’s political landscaped changed drastically through the Dissolution of the Monasteries under Henry VIII and even more so when it became property of the English crown. The main industries in Newark were the production of clothing, pumps and agricultural machinery and with its pleasant environment and good transportation links it has now become a commuter town for Nottingham.
