£50m regeneration project at historic Victorian site in Derby
20 acre plot set to be transformed into new retail, residential, leisure and office scheme

An historic Victorian goods site in Derbyshire is set for a new lease of life through plans by Clowes Developments to build a giant supermarket, 150 new homes, cafes, retail and office space on the outskirts of Derby city centre.
The Friar Gate Goods Yard has been derelict for over 40 years. The site of a grade II-listed Victorian bonded warehouse, the area has recently attracted vandals, arsonists and drug users, but a £50m regeneration project will transform the site if plans are approved by Derby City Council.
Commenting on the scheme, Andrew Bock, director at Clowes Developments, said: "If we don't get this project off the ground then the Friar Gate Goods Yard site could be facing another 50 years of dereliction.
"This is a very significant project for us and for the city. It won't be easy to deliver but having met with Derby City Council we are optimistic and we hope to get planning consent in the autumn. That would allow us to start work on site by this time next year."
The development will transform an underused area in the heart of Derby to a new high quality mixed use area. The proposed apartments, boulevards and tree lined squares combined with the renovation of the existing listed buildings will give Derby a vibrant professional quarter to rival the city centre regeneration seen in other Midlands' cities.
