Scotland's largest police force has revealed plans to set up a new headquarters with office space in Glasgow.A derelict site in the city's east end has been earmarked by Strathclyde Police for development, with the force planning to leave the Pitt Street building it has occupied since 1975, the Glasgow Evening Times reports.
The £38 million base will be located in Dalmarnock, just 800 yards from the 2014 Commonwealth Games Village.
Strathclyde's Deputy Chief Constable Neil Richardson said the existing home of the force is no longer fit for purpose and has become increasingly expensive to maintain.
"A proposed new building is not merely about bricks and mortar, it is about enabling change and delivering improvement," he told the newspaper.
Mr Richardson added that police officers in Glasgow will be placed under "more and more scrutiny" as the city prepares to host the Commonwealth Games.
Strathclyde Police employs approximately 8,000 officers and provides law enforcement services on behalf of 12 local authorities.
