Geothermal heat pump unveiled at One New Change

Advanced renewable energy technology now operational at One New Change, Land Securities' new retail and office space development

One New Change, the new complex offering shopping facilities and office space in the City of London, is now home to Europe's largest heat pump system.

The geothermal technology has been installed beneath the Cheapside building, controlling the temperature inside by transferring heat to and from the ground below.

Building owner Land Securities estimates the heat pump will cut at least ten per cent off carbon emissions at One New Change, as well as saving about £300,000 in energy bills each year.

Climate change minister Greg Barker described the technology, which uses 60 kilometres of pipework, as "British innovation at its best".

He added: "Extracting warmth from the ground underneath London will help save on the building's heating bills and will cut carbon."

Land Securities is aiming to reduce the carbon emissions of its buildings by 30 per cent by 2020.

One New Change features 333,000 sq ft of new office space in London, with life insurance firm Friends Provident announcing plans to base its new headquarters at the development earlier this week.
