Green light for Greenwich mixed-use scheme

Cathedral Group & DevSec to create new community on site of former industrial estate

Cathedral Group and funding partner Development Securities have been granted planning permission to create a new community including residential, retail, leisure, educational and office space in Greenwich on the site of the former Greenwich Industrial Estate, immediately adjacent to its main arrival point.

The Planning Board of Greenwich Council unanimously voted on 14th April to approve the application for The Movement; a vibrant, highly sustainable and truly mixed-use scheme located on the site, currently derelict, which is adjacent to Greenwich DLR and Mainline Station; the main point of entry for visitors to the World Heritage Centre.

Cathedral Group and Development Securities developed the proposals with award-winning architects HLM and Studio Egret West and in close consultation with Greenwich Council. Planning consultants Savills advised.

The Movement will comprise 181 residential apartments, 358 student apartments, education/administrative space, a health and fitness club, convenience food store, nursery and business incubator or 'start up' units - all located along a new public, pedestrian-friendly street connecting the DLR with Norman Road.

The Movement will be an exemplar 21st century development. There will be an on-site 'energy centre' providing renewable energy, more than 400 spaces available for bicycles and an innovative 'bike cafe' which will double up as a cycle repair shop.

Cathedral hopes to start work on the site later this year. In the meantime, the developer intends to make sure the site is active and is planning a number of onsite activities in line with The Movement's philosophy, including working with Greenwich Cooperative Development Agency to create raised vegetable beds for community use.
