Green travel success at Newcastle office scheme

One in three workers at Quorum Business Park travel by public transport

Quorum Business Park and Arriva are celebrating an acceleration in green travel, as now at least one in three people travel to work at the offices in Newcastle by public transport.

The annual Quorum survey of the staff working on the park showed a 12% drop in car use in the last year, as well as the number of people travelling by public transport increasing from 20% in February 2008 to 36% in February 2011.

A key reason for the shift to public transport is Quorum’s partnership with transport operator Arriva which has developed its transport infrastructure to the park and increased the frequency of the service.

Quorum Business Park recently received gold award status for travel planning in the North East from the Department for Transport’s sustainable transport organisation, Smarter Choices.

The park’s commuter centre manager Laura Kerry said, “The yearly Quorum staff survey has highlighted the success of all the work ourselves and Arriva have done to improve the transport network to the business park. Around 10,000 employees are expected to work at Quorum when the scheme is completely finished, and the advances we’ve made with Arriva within our travel plan will ensure that business park staff can get to and from work easily and by a sustainable mode of transport.”

Other ways in which Quorum promotes sustainable travel is through giving all employees access to cycle parking and shower facilities and forming a Bicycle User Group which meets once a month. Pedestrian and cycling site audits have also been carried out followed by access being improved to the park, with more people now commuting by walking and cycling as a result. A car sharing scheme and a promotional cycling campaign for staff living within five miles of Quorum have also been introduced.
