English Heritage has called for a review of the Liverpool Waters project, which is set to create new apartments and office space in the city's northern docklands.

Developer Peel Holdings claims the £5.5 billion initiative will create more than 25,000 jobs and regenerate a historically important part of Liverpool, but the conservation watchdog is concerned over the potential impact of the scheme.

It said the construction of underground car parks could damage buried remains of the docks and harm the area's World Heritage Site.

"We are also concerned the amount of information provided in the application does not allow the effect of the development on historic buildings to be assessed accurately," a spokesperson for English Heritage told the Liverpool Daily Post.

Liverpool Waters involves the regeneration of a 60-hectare site to create a mixed-use waterfront quarter, including new office space in Liverpool.

The outline planning application was submitted by Peel on October 4th 2010, with the company due to host two presentations about the project at the city's Crowne Plaza Hotel on January 31st and February 7th.
