Menta, the urban regeneration company, has submitted a planning application to the London Borough of Croydon for the redevelopment of its sites in Cherry Orchard Road, adjacent to East Croydon Station.
The application for a major mixed-use scheme designed by architects Make, includes a range of homes, shops, community facilities, small business units and a hotel, all set within high-quality public realm. It also provides for an open, safe and secure station approach to facilitate the new East-West pedestrian bridge, proposed as part of the East Croydon Masterplan and connecting Addiscombe with Croydon’s main shopping and business area.
The proposal constitutes a completely fresh look at the site following the withdrawal of a previous application in 2009 and extensive public consultation. Its main features are two residential buildings, including a 53-storey tower, providing a total of 499 homes including a proportion of social/shared-ownership housing, and separate family housing units, a 4-star ‘boutique’ hotel with 22 luxury serviced apartments, 71,000 sq ft Grade A start-up office space in Croydon town centre to encourage local business growth and further inward investment.
Commenting on the scheme Craig Marks of Menta said: “These proposals are the result of many months of work and consultation with a range of stakeholders including local people. We are satisfied that the scheme we have submitted maximises the potential of this important site which is so critical to the future regeneration of Croydon’s town centre environment. We are also pleased that we will be able to deliver a wide range of community and other benefits as part of the proposals, including the new station entrance from Addiscombe which will contribute a major boost to the local economy and attract further inward investment.”
It is hoped that the planning application will be considered by the London Borough of Croydon in July 2011. The planning consultants are GL Hearn. For further information and updates, visit www.cherryorchard-croydon.co.uk.
