The new home of the Northern Ballet and the Phoenix Dance Theatre has been officially opened in Leeds by Prince Edward.

Located near the West Yorkshire Playhouse in Quarry Hill, the £12 million building features a 230-seat studio theatre, a health suite, a public exhibition area and office space in Leeds.

It is said to be the largest purpose-built space for dance outside London and was mainly funded by Leeds City Council, the regional development agency Yorkshire Forward and the Arts Council.

Artistic director at the Northern Ballet David Nixon said the six-storey development will establish the city as "a powerhouse for dance" in the UK.

He added: "Our new home is a testament to the strength of support and confidence in the future of dance at the forefront of the cultural life of Leeds".

A public open day was held on Saturday (January 22nd) to give people a chance to see the new building, watch rehearsals and take part in free dance classes.

Last week, Ripley Capital's plan to redevelop the 21 Queen Street building to provide a new option for companies looking to rent offices in Leeds was granted approval.
