A £5.5 billion redevelopment scheme that could create new office space in Battersea has been given the green light by the mayor of London.Boris Johnson approved plans by Real Estate Opportunities (REO) to revamp a 40-acre site around the famous Battersea Power Station, which ceased operations in 1983.
The scheme involves the construction of two new London Underground stations on the Northern Line, as well as shops, office space, leisure facilities and thousands of homes.
In a statement, the mayor said the plans will help to preserve the power station's status as "an iconic feature of the capital's skyline".
Mr Johnson added: "With its future secured through this regeneration, [the building] will once again play a part in driving London's economy."
REO's proposal has already received approval from Wandsworth Council and will now go before the secretary of state for communities and local government.
The company is currently seeking a financial partner for the development, which is expected to create up to 25,000 new jobs in the area.
