Prime Minister David Cameron, together with Lord Heseltine has today visited the Wirral Waters site in Birkenhead. Wirral Waters is the biggest regeneration scheme of its type anywhere in the UK and is set to transform the economic fortunes of Birkenhead and Wallasey, as well as Wirral and the broader Liverpool City Region.
They met with the Leader of Wirral Metropolitan Borough Council and members of the City Region Local Enterprise Partnership and were given a concise presentation of the 17m sq ft scheme and heard about other plans for regeneration in the Liverpool City Region. This was followed by a tour of the Wirral Waters site.
In November Office Space News reported that the Peel Group was given the green light by the Government to go ahead with its £4.5bn scheme which will deliver 400,000 sq ft of prime waterfront office space in Liverpool and will create over 20,000 permanent new jobs in the area. Together with its cross-river partner Liverpool Waters, the “Peel Waters” scheme will transform the derelict docks in Liverpool and Birkenhead into a world-class waterfront.
Leader of Wirral Council, Cllr Jeff Green said: “I am delighted to have welcomed David Cameron to see for himself what a difference this development will make to Wirral.
“This is the most important regeneration project in Wirral’s history and I am extremely pleased that the Prime Minister and Lord Heseltine recognise the significance of what is being achieved here through strong partnership working between Peel and the Council.”
