Land Securities’ mixed-use scheme, One New Change, has won a Green Apple Award for the Built Environment. Organised by the Green Organisation, the Green Apple Awards are one of the most popular environmental awards in the world and are now in their fifteenth year. The Awards were presented by Trevor Bayliss O.B.E, and inventor of the wind-up radio at the University of Westminster on 20 June 2011.

Hoare Lea designed the office and retail MEP systems for this outstanding development and provided specialist vertical transportation sustainability and energy systems advice.

Designed by internationally-renowned Pritzker prize-winning architect Jean Nouvel, with Sidell Gibson as delivery architects, One New Change comprises 333,000 sq ft of office space in the City of London and 226,000 sq ft of retail accommodation.

Hoare Lea provided an innovative and energy efficient solution, featuring one of the most sophisticated commercial ground source heat pump systems in Europe, comprising 196 active energy piles and one pair of open loop boreholes. The energy system is estimated to reduce carbon emissions by at least 10% and it is envisaged that it will save £300,000 on energy bills a year.

Other projects recognised included the offices in the Midlands of The Woodland Trust, office space in Aberdeen at Inverdee House, and the library and offices in Oldbury, Birmingham of Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council.

The Overall National Green Champion was chartered architects Ansell & Bailey who are headquartered at offices in Euston and who also operate out of offices in Manchester.
