The UK Green Building Council (UK-GBC) has announced the launch of a new task group to discuss carbon reduction in office space and other commercial structures.Sponsored by British Land and Cundall, the group of experts and leading companies is set to make recommendations in March about the introduction of Display Energy Certificates for all commercial premises in the country.
Non-domestic buildings are responsible for approximately 17 per cent of the UK's total carbon emissions.
The UK-GBC's efforts are likely to have implications for owners of office space in central London and other important business locations.
Paul King, chief executive of the council, said the government's current policy on the carbon emissions of non-domestic buildings "needs urgently sorting out".
He added: "We think government could simplify regulations to both reduce the burden on business and achieve greater carbon reductions."
Members of the task group include Balfour Beatty, British Land, DTZ, E.ON, Land Securities and Sainsbury's.
