Wykeland House goes solar

21st century technology added to one of Hull’s historic Old Town buildings

Property developers the Wykeland Group have just installed a state-of-the-art solar energy system at its offices in Hull. The work was completed by local solar experts Dodds Solar.

Wykeland House in Queen Street was constructed as a warehouse around 200 years ago, the four-storey building stands at the confluence of the Rivers Humber and Hull and has views across the estuary and to The Deep. Its car park was previously Blows Wharf and the floor-to-ceiling windows in some of the offices were once loading bays taking goods from Humber barges.

It is now the proud bearer of one of the city’s latest solar energy systems consisting of 21 photovoltaic panels fitted to the roof to generate up to 3,540 kilowatt hours each year.

The installation is seen as a pilot project for Wykeland, a company that is keen to include renewable energy schemes in future property refurbishments and construction.

Wykeland architect, Graham Aitchison, said: “We’ve been monitoring the development of solar energy systems for some time and the introduction of the Feed-in Tariff has made the technology even more attractive.

“In addition to the anticipated cost savings by using light to generate our power, this will also enable us to increase our contribution towards a greener environment by reducing the carbon footprint of the building. We are hopeful we can use the technology on more of our projects, both new-build and refurbishments.”
