Salisbury is a city in Wiltshire, England. It is located 23 miles northwest of Southampton, 27 miles northeast of Bournemouth and 38 miles southeast of Bath. The postcode is SP1-SP2 and the town has a population of approximately 50,000.

Salisbury is sometimes referred to as the City of New Sarum to distinguish it from Old Sarum which is the site of the original settlement in the area that dates back to prehistoric times. The city changed names often and was called Sorviodunum under the Roman rule, Searesbyrig under the Saxon rule and Seresberi under the Norman rule. The first Salisbury cathedral was built between 1075 and 1092 and later enhanced in 1120. However, due to deteriorating relations between the clergy and the military, the cathedral was relocated elsewhere. In 1220, New Sarum then was founded and a new cathedral built, which is now known as a masterpiece of early English architecture. Today the cathedral holds the four remaining copies of the Magna Carta and a mechanical clock from 1386.
