Royal Leamington Spa is a spa town in Warwickshire, England. It is located 27 miles southeast of Birmingham, 35 miles west of Northampton and 34.8 miles southwest of Leicester. The postcode is CV31-CV33 and the town has a population of approximately 45,000.
In the Domesday Book of 1086, the town appears as Lamintone which derives from the Anglo-Saxon Leman-tun meaning ‘farm at the river Leam’. Leamington remained a minor village until the 17th century when the healing properties of spa waters, which had already been known to the Romans, were rediscovered. This led to the development of many spas and sea resorts around England where the upper classes traveled for recreational purposes. In 1814 the Royal Pump Rooms and Baths were opened, attracting many visitors. This started Leamington’s involvement in the tourism industry and led to the construction of numerous Georgian townhouses by the wealthy visitors. The town’s growing popularity led to Queen Victoria granting the town the prefix ‘Royal’ in 1838. The Royal Pump Rooms ware extended several times until 1890 when spa towns became less popular and Leamington became better knows as a shopping place when many retired people and members of the middle-class moved to the town from Birmingham and Coventry.
