Commercial Offices to Let in Angel, Islington & Serviced Offices to Rent in Angel, North London
The Angel, Islington, considered by many to be a district in its own right, is that area of Islington in the London Borough of Islington situated around the London Underground tube station, Angel. The northern part of the area – the Liverpool Road junction northwards -lies within the district of Islington but the southern half is in the neighbouring Finsbury. The area below Penton Street and east of Pentonville Road is in the adjoining district of Pentonville. The area acquired certain fame when it was included in the British version of Monopoly as The Angel, Islington but as the third cheapest property on the board!
The Angel Islington was originally an inn near a tollgate on the Great North Road at what is now the corner of Islington High Street and Pentonville Road although the corner itself is actually in Finsbury. It had been a coaching inn from the early 17th century. The area was called Merry Islington because it had always been a great entertainment centre of London. Being outside London, Islington also became a refuge after the plagues – in 1665 a City resident sought such refuge here but was refused and was taken to another inn and found dead the next day.- and the Great Fire of London. It was also a place of safety for travellers entering London from the north and who were loathe to cover the open land between Islington and the City of London at night in case they fell prey to highwaymen, vagrants, rouges or sham soldiers would relieve them of their valuables and possibly their lives. The area also offered large fields for the farming community to rest their animals before the onward journey to Smithfield meat market. Pictures and prints of the 17th century onwards show the Inn as a large old country hostelry and the courtyard features in Hogarth’s print of the Stage Coach.
In 1819, The Angel was rebuilt and became a coaching inn - the first staging post outside the boundaries of the City of London and became a local landmark. It achieved fame in print when Charles Dickens made mention of it in Oliver Twist "The coach rattled away and, turning when it reached the Angel at Islington, stopped at length before a neat house in Pentonville". At the end of the 19th century, The Angel was replaced yet again with another new building constructed in pale terracotta stone with a corner cupola. From 1921 to 1959, the building was used as a Lyons Corner House. Although the Angel Café, as it was known, was one of the larger restaurants, ranked between a teashop and a Corner House, it received little publicity within the J. Lyons house journals. In the event the plans, which the London County Council had drawn up for the modernisation of the Angel, did not affect this site and the building, with its dome, is still intact and in commercial usage. However today there is still a pub situated, just next door to the original building and named The Angel.
The area is of course served by the Angel Tube station opened in 1901 as the northern terminus of a new extension from Moorgate in the City of London. It is one of five stations on the London Underground system named after a public house. Common with many other stations on the line, it was originally built with a single central island platform serving two tracks and access from street level was via lifts. For years, the station regularly suffered from congestion and overcrowding which, especially with the island platform, constituted a major safety issue. Consequently, the station underwent a comprehensive rebuild, reopened in 1992, and contains the longest single escalator rise in Western Europe. A comprehensive network of local and cross London routes as well as four night routes covers the area.
The Angel Islington, perhaps, is better known as a landmark location rather than a centre of commercial and retail activity but it is bounded on all sides by areas that offer a comprehensive range of offices with easy access to the City of London and Canary Wharf as well as the West End of London.
