Bedfordshire forms part of the East of England region. It borders Cambridgeshire to the north-east, Northamptonshire to the north, Buckinghamshire (and the Borough of Milton Keynes) to the west and Hertfordshire to the south-east. Bedfordshire was historically divided into Barford, Biggleswade, Clifton, Flitt, Manshead, Redbournestoke, Stondon, Willey, Wixamtree, along with the borough of Bedford. In 1897, Kensworth and part of Caddington were transferred from Hertfordshire to Bedfordshire.
Bedfordshire is divided into three unitary authorities: the boroughs of Bedford and Luton, and the District of Central Bedfordshire. Bedfordshire’s six constituencies are: Bedford, Luton North, Luton South, Mid Bedfordshire, North East Bedfordshire and South West Bedfordshire. Bedfordshire’s two largest towns are Luton (203,800) and Bedford (79,190). Other smaller towns (with populations over 10,000) are (from biggest to smallest), Leighton Buzzard, Dunstable, Kempston, Houghton Regis, Biggleswade, Leagrave, Flitwick and Sandy.
Bedfordshire lies on many of the main transport routes which link London to the Midlands and Northern England. This includes the A1 London to Edinburgh road (The Great North Road) and the A5 London to Holyhead road (Watling Street), passing through Dunstable. Three of England's main railway lines pass through Bedfordshire including the West Coast Main Line from London to Northampton, the East Coast Main Line (with stations at Arlesey, Biggleswade and Sandy) from London to Peterborough and the Midland Main Line serving Luton and Bedford. There are rural services also running between Bedford and Bletchley along the Marston Vale Line. London Luton Airport has flights to many UK, Europe, North America and North African destinations, operated by the low-cost airlines.
Two universities are based in the county – the University of Bedfordshire and Cranfield University. These busy institutions attract students from all over the UK and abroad. The headquarters for Moto Hospitality is based at Toddington service station, the Kier Group is based in Sandy and Whitbread (the UK based brewery and hospitality company) is based in Dunstable. Notable visitor attractions include Woburn Abbey (the location of the Woburn Safari Park) and Whipsnade Zoo covering over 600 acres.
