Finsbury, London Commercial Office Space to Rent & Serviced Offices to Let in Finsbury, London, EC1
Finsbury is a district of Central London that lies to the south of the London Borough of Islington and it should not be confused with Finsbury Park in the London Borough of Haringey. Finsbury lies immediately north of the City of London and Clerkenwell; west of Shoreditch and south of Islington & City Road. The eastern part of the district is sometimes known as St Luke’s whereas the name Finsbury is now most often used to define the western part of the district, the home of the former Finsbury Town Hall, Exmouth Market, the Sadler's Wells Theatre & City University; all accessible by the London Underground stations of the Angel, Barbican and Farringdon.
The name Finsbury is derived from the word Vinisbir, which was first, recorded in the early 13th century and means "manor of a man called Finn." In the Middle Ages, Finsbury was part of the great fen which lay outside the walls of the City of London. In the early 17th century, the area was improved and became a recreational site where trees were planted and gravel walks created. The Honourable Artillery Company relocated to Finsbury in 1641, where it remains, and in 1665, the Bunhill Fields burial ground was opened in the area. In the late 17th century, building began on Finsbury Fields and at the end of the 18th century, a residential suburb was built with its centre at Finsbury Square. The parish church of St Luke’s was built in 1732-33.
Finsbury Square is a 0.7-hectare (1.7-acre) square developed in 1777 on the site of a previoumapss area of green space known as Finsbury Fields and which lay in the parish of St Luke’s and near Moorfields which become the original site in 1805 for the London Dispensary for curing diseases of the Eye and Ear. Finsbury Square is sited on the east side of City Road opposite the east side of Bunhill Fields and its nearest tube station is Moorgate.
Finsbury Pavement is a street connecting City Road with Moorgate. It forms a part of the London Inner Ring Road – A501- and before the introduction of the ring of steel security measures within the City of London, it formed a major through route to London Bridge and south London. The name was formerly Moor Fields Pavement. The area was first drained in 1527, and the existing postern made into a gate in the City Wall at Moorgate. In the early 19th century, the southern end of the street was renamed Moorgate, by the City of London.– and the name change marked the boundary, but today, due to boundary changes, most of the street is within the City of London.
During the mid 18th century, the Islington Turnpike Trust built City Road, to connect with this road from the City. It became an early terminus for coach traffic from the north, and later became the terminus for tramways running from Islington. At the end of the 19th century, Finsbury Pavement became the City terminus for the Great Northern and City Railway underground railway serving Finsbury Park. It was taken over by London Underground in 1913, as a part of the Northern Line Highbury Branch and the terminus was extended to Moorgate railway station. However, the branch was never integrated with the underground system, and is now operated as a suburban service the Northern City Line.
Finsbury Circus is an elliptical square within the City of London and is the largest public open space within the City's boundaries. It has an immaculately maintained Lawn Bowls club in the centre and a bandstand is located nearby. The nearest London Underground Tube stations are Moorgate and Liverpool Street Station with its main line station.
