Liverpool Street Commercial Property to Rent & Serviced Offices to Let in Liverpool Street, London, EC2

The Liverpool Street district lies in the northeastern corner of the City of London and is informally defined as the area around the main line railway terminus known as London Liverpool Street or simply Liverpool Street.  National Express East Anglia operates almost all passenger services out of Liverpool Street. It operates local and suburban services on the Great Eastern and West Anglia lines and express services to Colchester, Clacton-on-Sea, Ipswich and Norwich and Cambridge as well as commuter services to parts of East London, Essex and Hertfordshire.   A daily express train to Harwich connects with the ferry from Harwich to Hoek van Holland forming the Dutchflyer service.   Liverpool Street is the terminus for the Stansted Express serving London Stansted Airport.  It is one of the busiest main line stations in the country, the third busiest in London after Waterloo and Victoria.   There is a connected London Underground station, which is the fifth busiest on the network and links the Central Line, Circle Line, Metropolitan Line, and Hammersmith & City Line giving onward access to the other London Airports and main line stations.   The area is also served by a major network of buses and night buses both local and cross London.

Liverpool Street station was built on the site of the original Bethlehem Royal Hospital which had existed there from the 13th to 17th century and was recognised as the world's first and oldest institution to specialise in the mentally ill.  The word bedlam, meaning confusion, is derived from a corruption of the name. The new station was opened to traffic in February 1874 by the Great Eastern Railway and became operational the following year.   Bishopsgate, the original terminal, was then closed to passengers reopening as a goods station in 1881 but was destroyed by fire in December 1964. The site is now part of the development to build extension of London Underground's East London Line to form part of the London Overground network.   The station was named after the street on which it stands, which in turn was named in honour of British Prime Minister Lord Liverpool having been built as part of an extension of the City of London towards the end of his term in office.

Great Eastern Railway recognised the need to have a rail terminal closer to the city than the one opened by its predecessor East Counties Railway at Shoreditch in 1840 and renamed Bishopsgate in 1846.  The construction of the new station began but the cost of property acquisition and the human costs of displacement because of wholesale demolition proved extremely costly.  This was  then compounded  by an irrational wish to link the GER lines to those of the sub-surface Metropolitan Railway, a link seldom used and relatively soon abandoned, which also required that the GER's lines had to drop down to below ground level from the existing viaducts east of Bishopsgate. This resulted in considerable gradients leading out of the station. Lord Salisbury, who was chair of the Great Eastern in 1870, said that the Liverpool Street extension was "one of the greatest mistakes ever committed in connection with a railway.

Liverpool Street Station was the first place in London to be hit by German Gotha aircraft during World War 1 when the station took a direct hit from 1,000 pounds of bombs, killed 162 people.  During World War 11, the glass roofing of the station was completely shattered by a bomb that landed in Bishopsgate.   The station underwent extensive modification between 1985 and 1992 acquiring many retail units both within the concourse and immediately outside, but its façade, Victorian cast-iron pillars, and the memorial for Great Eastern Railway employees who died during the Great War were retained.     The station has exits to Bishopsgate, Liverpool Street and the iconic Broadgate development built on the site of the former Broad Street Station and remains a stunning example of the fusion of modern facilities within the traditional environment. The Great Eastern Hotel also built at the time of the new station was also extensively refurbished in the late 1990s and is now a luxury boutique hotel boasting several highly rated restaurants.  The station acquired certain fame when it was included as one of the four main line stations in the British version of Monopoly.   Liverpool Street was twinned with Amsterdam Centraal Station in 1993, and there is a plaque marking this on the concourse close to the main entrance to the Underground.

Although Liverpool Street is centred on the station the area has been subject to a great deal of retail development and commercial development both corporate, financial and professional; its location and access to transport links makes it a sought after area for most business needs. The area has much to offer in terms of location and facilities including many flexible serviced offices to rent in Liverpool Street as well as offices to let on terms that are more traditional and state of the art virtual offices.
