The town started as a small settlement called Etone, which means ‘water town’ and refers to the river Anker running through the town centre.  It is mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1086 as a hamlet, but grew in the following centuries when it received a market charter.  A Benedictine nunnery was built in the 12th century that led to the change in name to ‘Nonne Eton’ and later then Nuneaton.  With Henry VIII’s Dissolution of the Monasteries, the nunnery fell into disrepair and was established as a grammar school in 1552.  Due to its location at the centre of the Warwickshire coalfields, it gradually grew from the 17th century onwards and became one of the largest towns in Warwickshire by 1801.  Main industries that developed in the town during the Industrial Revolution were the textile industry, brewing, along with brick and tile making. The town was heavily bombed due to munitions factories in the area in World War II and rebuilt in the post-war years.
