Old Street Commercial Office Space to Rent & Serviced Offices to Let in Old Street, London
Old Street, on the edge of the City of London, runs west to east from Goswell Road in Clerkenwell in the London Borough of Islington to the crossroads where it intersects to the north with Kingsland Road, to the south with Shoreditch High Street and Hackney Road to the east in Shoreditch which lies in the London Borough of Hackney. The eastern half of the road is on the London Inner Ring Road thus forms part of the boundary of the London Congestion Charge zone.
The name Old Street was recorded as Ealdestrate as early as the beginning of 13th century and later in the late 14th century as le Oldestrete. There is also a school of thought which suggest that road is of ancient origin – hence the name – and could have been part of the Roman Road connection Silchester and Colchester by passing the City of London. The western part of the road was widened in the late 19th century. However, some domestic buildings from the 18th and early 19th century still survive where Old Street narrows to the east of Coronet Street. At the east end of Old Street on the south side is the old Shoreditch Town Hall.
Old Street has been subject to both commercial and retail development and some regeneration providing a range of office accommodation on the fringes of the City of London to support most business usage as well as a thriving restaurant, café and bar life with some 140 plus units in and around the immediate area. In addition to the independent outlets, there are many high street names. Old Street also boasts a Power League Five a side football facility. During daylight hours, the area around Old Street and further east in Shoreditch is conventional, but as dusk arrives, it comes alive with the sounds of clinking glasses and thumping beats. This is one of the best areas in London for a night out with a very high concentration of bars and clubs.
Old Street Station, originally opened in November 1901 by the first deep-level tube railway, the City and South London Railway, as part of an extension of its line from Moorgate to Angel, is served by the London Underground as well as the National Rail Northern City Line operated by First Capital Connect. The station is located under Old Street Roundabout at the junction with City Road just north of the City of London. There is no ground-level station building, access being by ramps and stairs to a modern station entrance that is part of a small shopping parade beneath the roundabout. The original ground-level buildings were demolished to make way for the roundabout. Old Street is also served by a bus network of local and cross London routes.
