In 1086 the town is mentioned for the first time in the Domesday Book under the name of Escumetrop, which is Old Norse for “Skuma’s homestead”. Scunthorpe is the product of the joining of five small villages namely Scunthorpe, Frodingham, Crosby, Brumby and Ashby. It is located in a bed of iron ore which was mined in the area since the Roman occupation.
