The M42 has a junction in Tamworth at the south-east of the county, and heads south-west towards Birmingham. The M6 runs north through the county and junctions 10A-16 are in the county and the M6 Toll, the UK's first toll motorway runs through the county with junctions in Weeford near Lichfield, Cannock.

Stafford itself is a major "crossroads" on the West Coast Main Line, handling passenger and freight services between London and Scotland along with traffic travelling between Manchester and Birmingham. Staffordshire also has an extensive network of canals including the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal, Caldon Canal, Coventry Canal, Shropshire Union Canal, Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal and Trent and Mersey Canal.

Staffordshire is home to the highest village in Britain, Flash, in the Staffordshire Moorlands standing at 463 m (1518 ft) above sea level. Staffordshire is also famous for the popular dog breed, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, bred for hunting purposes in the county.
