The Waterloo area which is loosely defined is built up around Waterloo Railway station, a major Central London railway terminus near the South Bank & within the London Borough of Lambeth.  Until 2007, Waterloo was the terminus for the Eurostar prior to moving north to St Pancras.  The Waterloo complex ranks as one of the busiest passenger terminals in Europe with more platforms and a greater floor area than any other railway station in the UK.  However, it should be noted that Clapham Junction which is just four miles away has the highest number of trains.  Waterloo is the terminus of a network of railway lines serving South West England and the intermediate suburbs.

 

The major transport interchange at Waterloo provides the area with excellent travel facilities. The Waterloo area has been subject to considerable commercial development and regeneration initiatives including Waterloo Millennium Green.   The retail environment continues to be served by the Lower Marsh Market which lies on the site of the ancient Lambeth Marsh which first appeared in historical records in 1377 – it is a centre to shop, eat and drink. This historic street has operated as a street market and centre for local shopping since the mid-nineteenth century and was designated a conservation area in 1984.   Lower Marsh together with The Cut, formed the commercial heart of the area from the early 19th century.  Other retail outlets both independent and high street names supplement the market’s offer.   The Cut has been transformed by the opening of Southwark Station and is home to the Young and Old Vic Theatres, award winning restaurants as well as bars and cafes.  It is also host to part of Southwark College as well as galleries and book shops.  The area has several hotels as well as residential development.
