Crewkerne is said to have its name originating from Cruc-aera, which consists of the British cruc for spur of a hill and the Old English aera meaning house or storehouse.  After the Norman invasion, William the Conqueror gave the manor to the Abbaye-aux-Hommes in Cean, France.  Later the town is mentioned in the Domesday Book as a royal manor. Crewkerne gained its prosperity, still seen in the parish church, through the textile industry and later as coach stop, when in Gregorian times there was lively travel from London to the new and fashionable seaside resorts on the coast.  During both the 18th and 19th centuries, the main source of employment in the area was webbing and making sails for the Royal Navy.
