Commercial Offices to Let in Bradford & Serviced Office Space to Rent in Bradford, West Yorkshire

Bradford is a city in West Yorkshire, Northern England and is located 8.6 miles west of Leeds and 16 miles northwest of Wakefield. The postcodes for the city of Bradford are BD1 through BD15 and the town has a population of approximately 292,000.

Bradford was first established as a settlement by the Anglo Saxons, who named the village after the “broad ford” at Church Bank around which it started to develop. In the Domesday Book of 1086, the small town appears as Bradeford and was centred on Kirkgate, Westgate and Ivegate.  In an uprising against the Norman forces invading Britain in 1070, the town was completely destroyed and only with the introduction of woollen trade to the area did it gain prominence again. From then onwards, the town’s development was closely tied to that particular industry, which declined during the English Civil War but was revived during the reign of William and Mary in the late 17th century.  The biggest turning point in Bradford’s history was the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century, when its wool production was mechanised as well as specialised with Bradford becoming the wool capital of the world. This brought an increase in population from 16,000 at the beginning of the century to 182,000 by the year 1850.  The population explosion and great industrial growth led to pollution problems and a fierce competition between similar manufacturers. However, in the 20th century, the textile industry started to decline and was replaced by other sectors that valued Bradford’s culture of innovation, which had ensured the city’s economic dominance over the area.

Bradford is well served by transport with train services being provided by the Northern Line of the National Rail connecting Bradford to Scarborough, Filey, Bridlington, Driffield, Beverley, Hull, Brough, Gilberdyke, Goole, Selby, Barton-on-Humber, New Holland, Grimsby, Scunthorpe, Lincoln, Gainsborough, Doncaster, York, Retford, Worksop, Sheffield, Chesterfield, Alfreton, Nottingham, Derby, Knaresborough, Harrowgate, Leeds, Castleford, Pontefract, Adwick, Conisbrough, Swinton, Meadowhall, Chinley, Stockport, Macclesfield, Congleton, Stoke-on-Trent, Manchester, Wilmslow, Sandbach, Crewe, Altrincham, Chester, Romiley, Marple, Glossop, Barnsley, Penistone, Huddersfield, Halifax, Dewsbury, Stalybridge, Rochdale, Bolton, Warrington, Liverpool, Earlestown, Wigan, Kirkby, Southport, Preston, Blackpool, Todmorden, Burnley, Nelson, Colne, Blackburn, Whalley, Hellifield, Settle, Lancaster, Carnforth, Barrow-in-Furness, Whitehaven, Workington, Carlisle, Appleby, Kirkby, Haltwhistle, Hexham, Newcastle, Darlington, Sunderland and Middlesbrough.  The closest airport is Leeds Bradford International Airport which is only 7.5 miles northeast of the city of Bradford.

Despite its industrial history, Bradford is home to several notable historic buildings such as Bradford Cathedral, Bolling Hall, which is a medieval building preserved as a museum.  City Hall, the former Wool Exchange, a lager Victorian cemetery in Undercliffe and Little Germany, which is a splendid Victorian commercial area with many listed buildings. Moreover, Cartwright Hall in Lister Park is a renowned art gallery and the National Media Museum is the most visited English museum outside London. Other museums are Salts Hill, with the world’s largest collection of Hockney artworks, and Bradford Industrial Museum, explaining the significant achievements of Bradford’s industrial history.

Bradford is well known for its long sporting tradition. The Bradford Bulls Rugby League Club, founded in 1907, were three time winners of the World Club Championships since 2003 and seven time winners of the Rugby Football League Championship, which makes them the most successful rugby team in the world. Moreover, Bradford City Association Football Club was formed in 1903 and is still active, playing in League Two.  Bradford also was home to Bradford Dukes speedway team with rider Gray Havelock, who was Speedway World Champion in 1992.
