Worksop is a large town in Nottinghamshire, England. It is located 17 miles south of Doncaster, 19 miles southeast of Sheffield and 14 miles north of Mansfield. The postcode is S80-S81 and the town has a population of approximately 39,000.
The town appears in the Domesday Book form 1086 as Werchesope. Around 1103 William de Lovetot, who is also often credited as the founder of Sheffield, established an Augustinian priory and a castle in Worksop, which made the town rise in status and develop into a market town in the following decades. After that growth was boosted by the Chesterfield
Canal built in 1777 and later the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway in 1849, which both connected Worksop to the surrounding area. During the Industrial Revolution the discovery of sizeable coal seams strengthened Worksop’s economy further until the mines were closed the 1990s.
