Commercial Offices to Let in Bermondsey, London & Serviced Offices in Bermondsey

Bermondsey lies on the south bank of the River Thames, and forms part of Southwark and is in two postal districts – SE1 and SE16; with the latter postcode covering the greater area.  Bermondsey is bounded by Rotherhithe to the east , Southwark to the west, and Walworth and Peckham to the south.  It is an area with a long history - the Bermondsey Street area was originally marshland, dotted with small islands and archaeologists have shown that the area’s earliest inhabitants were from the prehistoric era.  The name Bermondsey is thought to be of Saxon origin deriving its name from "Beormund's Eye".

Although host to London’s first railway line 20th century line reorganization and station closures left Bermondsey less well served with transport connections than some of its neighbours on the South Bank of the River but despite this, the area still does offer easy access to the City of London, Canary Wharf and City Airport.  At present London Bridge mainline station and its London Underground station is the area's main point of access to the transport network although Bermondsey now has its own Underground station on the Jubilee Line Extension.  South Bermondsey overground station is served by Southeastern trains.  The area is also served by a network of local and cross London bus routes.

As it developed over the centuries, Bermondsey underwent some striking changes. After the Great Fire of London it was settled by the well-to-do and took on the character of a garden suburb and a pleasure garden was founded there in the 17th century.  In the 18th century, the discovery of a spring in the area led to Bermondsey becoming a spa leisure resort but by the mid-19th century much of this gentility was lost.  Parts of Bermondsey, especially along the riverside had become a notorious slum - with the arrival of industrial plants, docks and immigrant housing. The area around St Saviour's Dock, known as Jacob’s Island was one of the worst in London and was immortalised by Charles Dickens in his novel Oliver Twist.  The area was also extensively redeveloped at this time and in to the early 20th century with the expansion of the river trade and the arrival of the railway. Industries that were considered too unpleasant to be carried on within the narrow confines of the City of London had been located to Bermondsey and in particular and away from the riverfront, the processing and trading of leather and hides.  Many buildings from this era still survive and have been converted for commercial use.

Bermondsey's 3½ miles of riverside were lined with warehouses and wharves, of which the best known is Butlers Wharf. They suffered severe damage during World War II and became redundant in the 1960's following the collapse of the river trade. Eventually in the 1980’s many of the wharves were redeveloped and have now been converted into a mixture of residential and commercial accommodation and quite a few of these developments have become some of the most upmarket and expensive properties in London.  In addition to this, the entire area has been subject to regeneration and refurbishment which is ongoing and now provides a varied offer of commercial and professional offices and workshops.  On the retail side, the area is close to Borough Market and home to a weekly Antique Market with antique shops and warehouses adjacent; art galleries and The Fashion and Textile Museum as well a range of specialist independent units and high street names plus a comprehensive and trendy food offer.  There has been a rise in demand for residential property in the area and Bermondsey too has its share of celebrity residents.  The area currently has several hotels and there are plans to build several others.

Bermondsey with a long history of commercial bust and boom centred around its river trade and allied commercial activity and is once again a thriving centre of regeneration and redevelopment and thus able to offer commercial properties of varying age and size both in new build developments and refurbished historical buildings such as warehouses and for all types of working environments.  This interesting range of commercial office space is available to let on both conventional more traditional terms, warehouse & industrial studio units to rent as well as serviced offices to let on highly flexible terms. These different types of offices for rent are offered alongside the benefit of access to meeting rooms and virtual offices in these fast developing postal code areas of both SE1 & SE16.  For help in securing the most competitively priced deal on office space to rent in the Bermondsey area or commercial offices in this historic Southeast London location, please contact London’s flexible office space expert via http://www.freeofficesearch.co.uk or call our London Headquarters on 020 7788 1030.
