Coalville is a town in
The town is named after the house of the owner of Whitwick Colliery, the Coalville House, which is an indicator of coal mining being the major industry in the area since medieval times. The coal seam is closest to the ground at Swannington where the first mining took place, while mining technology had to advance before Coalville could gain access to the seam. Accordingly, the town grew up around the 1840s with the advent of industrial coal mining. The railway reached Coalville in the first half of the 19th century which furthered the town growth until the stations were closed in the 20th century.
